About the Artist
A message from the artist:
My name is Rob Billheimer (aka Rob Alchemy); I'm a multi-disciplinary artist from Edmonton, Alberta Canada!
I couldn't be more stoked to be involved with Braille Skateboarding for this artistic collaboration, and before I say anything else, I would simply like to express my unconditional gratitude and love for the opportunity to be part of this family we call the Braille Army!
My story is one of trying to find my purpose and path in life as an artist in a world that doesn't always seem to embrace artistic expression. I grew up as an aspiring cartoonist all through childhood being influenced by the Sunday morning funnies in the Newspaper, such as The Far Side by Gary Larson and Calvin & Hobbes by Bill Watterson. Once I was all grown up, I found myself excelling in digital media as a Graphic Designer out of University, but that ship didn't sail for long; As the years slowly turned into decades, I found myself in a weird place where (it seemed) the more I put of myself into my design and art, the more I seemed to...Fail at it. Or so I thought was the case.
Ultimately, my design career went down in flames, leaving me in a sort of "life purpose vacuum" where I held a deep grudge against life in general for putting me in this life on a planet with talents and abilities that the world simply didn't want. However, it was through an indescribable period of intense depression and soul searching when I discovered this was not the case at all, but that I was the one steering my own ship and deciding that my life was a negative one, not a positive one. Through this, I discovered that I could literally "alchemize" this negative mess that I thought my life to be - Into a positive one by changing my own perspective on reality first. Long story short, I had to put a positive meaning on my reality in order to see that reality flip into love and positivity before my very eyes. With this, I learned this life's most profound lesson to date: Do it for the love. Period. Letting go of society's expectations of making art as a commodity, but rather to make art for the sheer joy of the experience. This is when everything changed. My life, the reality I perceive, my relationships - EVERYTHING in my life started falling into place all of the sudden.
This is when I realized what Alchemy really means, and that we all have the ability to alchemize our lives into never-ending love and excitement by simply following love as the ONLY motivator in life. This is a BIG concept to pack into a few short paragraphs, but as an artist and human in general - This is my message.
I didn't read this in a book or get told it by a master. I found it for myself. I can tell you...This is very real. Life can be the most amazing experience, but it's up to US, not the world around us. And the only thing you have to do to discover this is follow the love; Love yourself first and follow the things you love FIRST simply because you love them... Make this a habit and just see where it takes you! All of this being said, I decided to approach Braille with this artistic collaboration that you see released before you today, because I just wanted to do another thing that I loved. And here we are! I hope my struggles, realizations and successes can not only be inspiration for those searching for their own path in the dark, but that I can also be a channel of support for those who are going through such experiences. We're all in this together, after all. Thank you for hearing my story and please never forget to love yourselves first.
